Mobile Apps About to Hit the One Million Mark, But Who Really Benefits from These Numbers?
By: Hillel Fuld
So people love numbers, the accuracy of those numbers is secondary. That is true about many industries, but when it comes to the mobile space, it seems like every day, another analytics company releases a new study about mobile apps that names some ridiculous number that has close to nothing in common with reality.
Mobilewalla is today's supplier of those numbers and the number we are talking about is a whopping one million mobile apps across all major mobile platforms. As PCMag explains, "it's unclear just how Mobilewalla is performing its count, in that representatives haven't specified whether they're talking about apps in general (double-counting the exact same app's iOS and Android versions, for example)".
Whatever the case may be and irrelevant of just how accurate these numbers are, there is no doubt that we are approaching the one million mark and if it doesn't happen today, it will happen tomorrow or the next day.
The split of mobile apps is as follows:
One million is a ridiculous number of apps considering that the term of an "App" was only introduced in July 2008!
"This is truly an astonishing accomplishment that cannot be ignored," says Anindya Datta, Mobilewalla's founder and executive chairman of Mobilewalla.
"In the early days most of the initial apps were "fun, indie" apps, such as the Doodle Jump game, one of the first mass-market apps to gain viral popularity and paved the entryway for other mass successes like Angry Birds," Datta later added. "As app usage skyrocketed, the nature of the app ecosystem changed quickly – new apps were designed to improve our lives, disseminate news, weather and even crop data in places like rural India."
So the obvious advantage of so many mobile apps is competition. Such numbers increase the quality of apps and lower the prices but this is not a platform to try and sell you on Capitalism.
However, on the flip side, the main "loser" here in this growing space of mobile apps, is the long tail developer. How do you stand out in the vast sea of mobile apps when some developers are spending millions of dollars on marketing and you can't even afford to move out of your garage?
App discovery is becoming increasingly difficult and many players are trying to find the secret sauce to solve it. Of course, no one has cracked it 100% yet, but we think we are well on our way and have the success stories to prove it.
If you are a mobile developer looking to get the word out and increase your downloads, shoot us an email at email@example.com and we will show you exactly what we are capable of!
By the way, the most updated count of mobile apps, according to Mobilewalla is 989,476, which leaves 10,524 to the million. Yipeee.
