Instagram’s Mobile Engineer Talks about His Biggest Fear. Any Guesses?

Instagram’s Mobile Engineer Talks about His Biggest Fear. Any Guesses?

By: Hillel Fuld (@hilzfuld)

By now, you have surely heard the news that has every geek and business analyst across the globe realigning their view of the market. Facebook has acquired the twelve person Instagram for a ridiculously whopping one billion dollars. What else is there to say? Some think it was smart, others think Zuck panicked. I think the rules are changing.

There is so much interesting analysis circulating the Web but I came across a month-old video of PandoDaily interviewing Shayne Sweeney, Instagram's lead mobile engineer and I thought it was very interesting.

Now to be clear, Facebook has a track record of buying companies, then shutting them down or worse, see the GoWalla story for example. Zuckerberg himself said this deal was different and he intends on letting Instagram continue to blossom. Having said that, you have to wonder how this acquisition will affect Instagram's core experience and values.

Many users are not too happy with the announcement and the blog posts explaining how to export your Instagram photos and shut down your account are getting nice traffic since Zuckerberg made the announcement. Then again, there is something uniquely possessive about the Instagram community. Just see what happened when Android first got access to the app.

In any case, Sweeney talks in the video below about his biggest fear and a part of me, as sad as it may be, thinks his worst fears just became a reality. Then again, the hundreds of millions he is making off this deal can pay for therapy to get over those fears, right?
